verslavingenA new study suggests that cannabinoids may play a crucial role in helping with stimulant addiction.

“A growing number of studies support a critical role of the ECBS and its modulation by synthetic or natural cannabinoids in various neurobiological and behavioral aspects of stimulants addiction. Thus, cannabinoids modulate brain reward systems closely involved in stimulants addiction, and provide further evidence that the cannabinoid system could be explored as a potential drug discovery target for treating addiction across different classes of stimulants.” – US Natural Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health [1]

In a study published by the ‘National Institute of Health,’ researchers discovered cannabinoids affect the brain’s reward system, which includes the components of an individual’s brain responsible for determining their behavior displayed and the amount of pleasure they feel in response to a substance, in a manner similar to that of stimulants. Evidence suggests that the endocannabinoid system (ECBS) produces neurological processes similar to ones present in the brains of individuals suffering from stimulant addictions. Researchers at ‘The Psychiatry Research Unit at Centre Hospitalier de Montreal’ in Canada claim this discovery opens the door for further exploration regarding the possibility of the cannabinoid system as a “potential drug discovery target for treating addiction across different classes of stimulants [1].”   Lees meer…

Can Medical Cannabis Stop The ADHD Epidemic?

ADHD  Reacties uitgeschakeld voor Can Medical Cannabis Stop The ADHD Epidemic?

marijuanaADHD seems to be a touchy subject among many doctors, as it remains one of the most controversial yet most common diagnoses in today’s society. It’s interesting to note that, although ADHD is believed to affect 5% of the adult population, it is most often diagnosed in school-age children, leading many to question whether ADHD is an actual disorder or merely a convenient way of dealing with more troublesome kids.

While the days of Ritalin are long over, – there’s a new designer drug called Vyvanse – medical opinions continue to be divided on this disorder. Although most doctors agree that ADHD is a real condition, the alarming rise in diagnoses over the years leads experts to suggest that the definition of this disorder is being too loosely applied in practice.

According to a recent story in the New York Times (1), nearly one in five high school boys and 11 percent of school-age children across the United States have been officially diagnosed with ADHD. That’s a 16 percent increase since 2007 and a 41 percent rise over the past decade.

Stimulants vs. Cocaine: What’s The Difference?

Along with the debate on how to identify children who suffer from this disorder, many parents are wary of the long-term effects of stimulant medications.

ADHD is most commonly treated with amphetamine-derived formulations, which are nearly identical in molecular structure to the street drugs known as cocaine and meth. Maybe “almost” isn’t entirely accurate, since pure methamphetamine is actually approved by the FDA for the treatment of ADHD – they just prefer to call it Desoxyn.

And while studies (2) have found that the brain can adapt to these medications – thereby requiring patients to regularly increase their dosages – there seems to be very little alternative as far as ADHD treatments go. But as is the case for many disorders, both patients and doctors alike seem to be overlooking a world-renowned plant that is currently approved for medical use in 18 states and the District of Columbia.

How Marijuana Can Help

Using marijuana to treat ADHD might seem counterintuitive, as marijuana is known to decrease its user’s attention span and overall motivation to get things done – a phenomenon admiringly known as “couch lock.” Even still, there is a significant amount of anecdotal evidence that marijuana can be useful in the treatment of this disorder, along with support from a growing body of medical marijuana research.

Before getting into how marijuana can help with ADHD, it’s important to understand just what symptoms embody this vague and often subjective disorder. Interestingly, ADHD seems to affect children in a very different way than adults. For instance, children with ADHD seem to exhibit hyperactivity, disruptive behavior, social problems and, ultimately, problems in their academic endeavors. On the other hand, adults seem to be more strongly affected by the mood-related symptoms of ADHD, which include anxiety, depression and OCD. Furthermore, the hyperactivity that is all-too-common in children seems to be almost completely reversed in adult sufferers, who seem to struggle more with an overall lack of motivation. Finally, both adults and children seem to have a higher incidence of sleep disorders, including insomnia, sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome.

Considering all of this, the symptom profile of ADHD certainly seems to support the use of medical marijuana. For instance, marijuana is known to have a calming effect on its user, which could reduce the hyperactivity exhibited by ADHD children as well as the anxiety experienced by adult sufferers. Furthermore, studies have found marijuana to be an effective treatment for depression (3), OCD (4) and a variety of sleep disorders, including insomnia (5) and sleep apnea (6).

Scientific research on the endocannabinoid system – the body’s natural cannabinoid system – provides even more support for the use of medical marijuana as a treatment of ADHD. In fact, studies (7) have found that patients with ADHD have higher levels of the endocannabinoid known as anandamide. Although anandamide is naturally produced by the human body, it has remarkably similar effects as the THC found in marijuana, as both of these cannabinoids seem to bind to the same cannabinoid receptors. Anandamide is known to be released on demand by the body in response to a variety of stress factors, suggesting that the body may activate the endocannabinoid system as a protective response to the onset of ADHD-related symptoms.

Finally, studies have identified a link (8) between activity of the endocannabinoid system and the release of dopamine. A lack of dopamine is believed to be one of the primary underlying factors in ADHD. This is the primary reason why stimulants are such an effective and commonly prescribed treatment, as stimulants mainly act to increase dopamine levels.

What Doctors Are Saying

It’s quite obvious that the majority of the medical community remains opposed to the use of medical marijuana for the treatment of ADHD, among many others. On the other hand, perspectives on marijuana are rapidly changing and doctors are beginning to voice their support for this alternative medicine.

One of these doctors is the late Dr. Claudia Jensen, who sadly passed away in 2007 after a battle with breast cancer. However, she leaves us with a convincing testimony of the effectiveness of medical marijuana in treating ADHD, based on her clinical experiences as a pediatrician and her passionate work as an instructor at the University of Southern California.

In an interview with MSNBC, Dr. Jensen concisely summarized why marijuana may be a safe and effective alternative to traditional stimulants.

“They don’t have to get stoned – it’s dose-related. But they do get the benefit of being able to focus, pay attention, not be impulsive, not be angry, be peaceful and relaxed and pay attention in school, which helps them get better grades.” – Dr. Claudia Jensen

Indeed, it seems like only a matter of time until the medical community as a whole will come to recognize the tremendous benefits of prescribing medical marijuana for patients with ADHD. Until then, we can only rely on the testimony of brave spokespeople such as Dr. Jensen to guide us in this field of alternative medicine.

Pot for pets? Seattle vets develop cannabis for dogs and cats

cannabisWith so many people using medical marijuana to treat a variety of conditions, a lot of pet owners are trying pot on their own animals. And it’s causing plenty of problems.

“If you get it right, it works, but the flip side is you can overdose them on it,” says Seattle veterinarian Sarah Brandon. “It’s not lethal, but most animals don’t like to feel the high of the THC. They get paranoia, they have respiratory discomfort, just all of the things that would go along with, if you will, a human having a freak out.”

But with so many animals needing treatment for conditions like arthritis, pain, and nausea, Brandon and her husband were convinced they could isolate the positive properties of pot.

For the last five years, they’ve been experimenting with hemp, the parts of the Cannabis plant that contain virtually no THC but have many of the beneficial compounds.

First, they tested it on their own pets and then expanded to other patients. Now, they’ve developed what’s believed to be the first cannabis treatments for pets.

Called Canna-Pet, the supplements feature all natural compounds such as Phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids that are also found in marijuana, without the high.

Brandon says the results have been dramatic.

“We’ve had a 100 percent positive reaction. We’re seeing cats and dogs experiencing discomfort walking or even moving around significantly improve.”

Shoreline pet lover Lisa Anderson is among those heartily endorsing Canna-Pet. The veterinary tech says she has a number of sick animals she’s taken in over the years. As a medical marijuana patient, she’s tried to treat some of them with her own medicine, but it hasn’t worked. “My dog got really loopy and sick,” she says

Anderson gave the cannabis a shot with her ailing Chihuahua after he suffered several conditions and had to have teeth removed.

“I thought I would give it a try instead of having the little guy suffer in pain while his mouth was healing, and it worked. He’s not loopy, he runs around, he plays, he plays with the cats.”

She’s since used it on several other pets, including another dog suffering from a bruised vertebra that left her nearly paralyzed.

“And she was up and moving around within 24 hours whereas 48 hours before that she wouldn’t even lift up her head.”

The Canna-Pet sells for $1 a pill. Brandon says one or two supplements a day are generally prescribed to treat most conditions. And it’s completely legal, since it’s made from hemp.

While their research is extensive, the veterinarian says there are still plenty of mysteries.

“If you give an animal the hemp and use it for pain control, they don’t get hungry. If you’re using it for controlling nausea, or help increase appetite, they eat better. I can’t explain it.”

Brandon hopes other professionals will take her research and continue working on new applications for medical cannabis for both pets and people alike.

“It would be really nice for people to be able to take something like this instead of the stuff that makes them high and be able to go to work or whatever they want to do.”

In the meantime, she’s just happy to be able to offer an alternative to opiates or other medications, many of which are extremely hard on animals or allergenic.

“It’s a little cheesy, but I’m really excited because there’s so much positive feedback from people who say it’s made their animals lives more comfortable. And that’s our main goal.”

In modern times, cannabinoid medicine is often administered and controlled by individuals with no formal medical training. Dispensaries are run almost entirely by entrepreneurs, and the role of doctors has mainly been limited to writing recommendations.

However, with the rising use of cannabis extract medicine, more medical doctors (M.D.) are getting involved. Their work is confirming what medicinal cannabis providers have been seeing for years – that cannabinoid medicine can eliminate cancer in humans and control other diseases.

You would likely be willing to try anything to relieve your discomfort if you lived in a constant state of debilitating fear and anxiety – especially when you were safe.  People fighting the ravages of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) will often tell you that the medication they are taking for PTSD treatment, does not work or does not provide an adequate amount of relief – but medical marijuana does.

What is PTSD?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health approximately 7.7 million Americans suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which is the feeling of being stressed or in danger when one is no longer in danger. PTSD is most widely associated with war veterans but can include anyone who has suffered a significant trauma such as rape, abuse, surviving a natural disaster, being in a terrifying accident, torture or kidnapping.  PTSD occurs in people of all ages and walks of life.  For the sake of this post, we refer to PTSD as it relates to adults.

Veterans Use Medical Marijuana to Treat Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

veterans1Veterans for Medical Cannabis Access (VMCA), is a Virginia-based non-profit service organization designed to assist veterans who wish to be able to use marijuana for medical purposes. They work towards safe access for veterans to medical marijuana without the fear of reprisal. Mike Krawitz, executive director of VCMA launched the “Allow United States Disabled Military Veterans Access to Medical Marijuana To Treat Their PTSD” petition last year. He said that he was concerned about military veterans risking losing their Veterans Affairs Department medical coverage if they are found to smoke pot or even discuss it with their doctors.

The petition was on the White House website, and was signed by 8,258 people. The White House usually requires 25,000 signatures before it will respond to such petitions, so it was struck down. They claimed that marijuana is not considered a “benign drug,” and it doesn’t meet safe or effective medicine standards.

Because cannabis was never considered an illegal substance prior or during the US Civil War, marijuana was widely accepted as a medical solution, and used frequently by soldiers to help with ailments and wounds.

On this day before Memorial Day the following advertisement from the Good Samaritan and Daily Physician, circa 1862, seemed appropriate. General Ulysses S. Grant (later US President) tells about the medical use of marijuana, “It is of great value to the wounded and feeble, and that it is harmless.” Possibly referring to opium that was being used and abused frequently during that period of history, and still today.

Confederate General General Robert E. Lee declares, “I wish it was in my power to place it (cannabis) in the pocket of every soldier, because I am convinced that it speedily relieves debility, fatigue and suffering”

It is beyond my comprehension that today we limit cannabis to those soldiers that defend our freedom. We also ignore science, common sense and the voice of the commanders in their charge by denying these brave men and women every treatment available, do we not owe them that much?

In 2014 leaders in the military support the use of cannabis, but solely for veterans. This needs to change. And now.

Marijuana Can Help Prevent Suicide, Study Suggests

Zelfmoord  Reacties uitgeschakeld voor Marijuana Can Help Prevent Suicide, Study Suggests
mei 302014

wietolie.euMarijuana does many magical things, not the least of which is make dubstep listenable. In Los Angeles, we use it pretty much legally for back pain, nausea and hot tubbing.

But a new study from Germany says that, in U.S. states like California where marijuana has become medically legit, rates of suicide have gone down.

The researchers note that suicide is often triggered by “stressful life events.” And you know what can take away the pain?

No. Not Enrique Iglesias. Stress! Or rather, chronic. Depending.

The academics note that “California includes anxiety as a qualifying condition” to obtain medical pot, “while Delaware and New Mexico both allow the use of medical marijuana for post traumatic stress disorder … ”

The Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Bonn, with the help of American researchers such as Daniel I. Rees of the University of Colorado’s Department of Economics, recently published their findings in a paper called High on Life? Medical Marijuana Laws and Suicide (PDF):

Our results suggest that the passage of a medical marijuana law is associated with an almost 5 percent reduction in the total suicide rate, an 11 percent reduction in the suicide rate of 20- through 29-year-old males, and a 9 percent reduction in the suicide rate of 30- through 39-year-old males.

The study takes some wild guesses, and one of them is that maybe medical marijuana users are cutting out the alcohol, which can be depressive:

The strong association between alcohol consumption and suicide related outcomes found by previous researchers (Markowitz et al. 2003; Carpenter 2004;

Sullivan et al. 2004; Rodriguez Andres 2005; Carpenter and Dobkin 2009) raises the

possibility that medical marijuana laws reduce the risk of suicide by decreasing alcohol

consumption.

The academics cite research on animals where there was “a potent anti-depressant effect” when they were injected with low doses of synthetic cannabinoid.

Of course this flies in the face of tons of research — not to mention what Dr. Drew Pinsky has said several times — that cannabis and depression go together like milk and cookies.

And, it seems clear to us, the only solid argument to be made here is there might be a correlation between medical marijuana states and lower rates of suicides.

Hmm. National suicide rates have been decreasing across the board.

Researchers say they focused mostly on young men because most medical marijuana patients in states like Arizona, Colorado and Montana are males, and roughly half are under 40. Data on women, apparently, was weak. (Women are four times less likely to commit successful suicide in general).

The German study’s rosy conclusion:

… The legalization of medical marijuana leads to an improvement in the psychological well being of young adult males, an improvement that is reflected in fewer suicides.

Believe that. Or not.

cannabis-bottleDid you know that cannabis was once used to treat equine ailments? HN’s resident Colorado girl Shara Rutberg investigates.

From Shara:

On my way to the barn, I pass The Farm, one of the many pot shops, er, medical dispensaries here in Boulder, Colorado, where we voted to legalize recreational pot and where an advocacy group literally handed out joints on a popular pedestrian mall a few weeks back. Down in Denver, there are more pot shops than Starbucks. And many have names like The Farm, and The Dandelion, that sound alluring to equines.

Might this just be the ideal thing to take the edge off my brave steed, who has done airs above the ground in response to jump decorations200 yards away across the cross country course? Would a handful of Mary Jane in the alfalfa make the pony peaceful with pumpkins (dear god!) on the jumps? Would it garner points for relaxation at the canter? Could I clip the beast without a vet if he nibbles a few kind cookies before I warm up the Wahls?

People have been using cannabis to help horses for ages. The ancient Greeks used it for colic and wound care. The U.S. government supplied cannabis as part of the standard first aid kit to cavalry troopers who also did vet duty in the field. A cavalry manual recommends it for “spasmodic colic and other intestinal troubles.”

braincancerFor years, an unnecessary label has been attached to this plant, and the fact that it is classified as an illegal drug for no reason is obscure.  Furthermore, the studies that prove cannabis can cure brain cancer are done so by safe cannabinoid delivery with zero psychoactive effects.

It’s becoming more clear that multiple substances labelled as “drugs” by the government as harmful  are most likely illegal due to the fact that they threaten multiple corporate interests. Prescription drugs alone kill over 100, 000 people every year. Our governments and the corporations that run them don’t have the best interests of the human race at hand. It seems that we should be more concerned about the drugs that are legal, as much as we are concerned about the ones that are not. Instead of constantly relying on them for information (corporations and governments), it’s up to us to do our own research and find out the truth for ourselves.

Cannabis has been proven to be effective for a wide range of ailments, this article will focus mainly on brain cancer. Cannabinoids refer to any group of related compounds that include Cannabinol and the active constituents of Cannabis. They activate Cannabinoid receptors in the body. The body itself produces compounds called endocannabinoids and they play a key role in many processes throughout the body that help to create a healthy environment. They also play an important role in immune system generation and re-generation.

Cannabinoids have been proven to reduce cancer cells as they have a great impact on the rebuilding of the immune system. While not every strain of cannabis has the same effect, more and more patients are seeing success in cancer reduction in a short period of time by using cannabis. Marijuana Compound Treats Schizophrenia with Few Side Effects: Clinical Trial

Schizofrenie  Reacties uitgeschakeld voor Marijuana Compound Treats Schizophrenia with Few Side Effects: Clinical Trial

o-HEMP-PLANT-OIL-facebook.jpgA compound found in marijuana can treat schizophrenia as effectively as antipsychotic medications, with far fewer side effects, according to a preliminary clinical trial.

Researchers led by Markus Leweke of the University of Cologne in Germany studied 39 people with schizophrenia who were hospitalized for a psychotic episode. Nineteen patients were treated with amisulpride, an antipsychotic medication that is not approved in the U.S., but is comparable to other medications that are.

The rest of the patients were given cannabidiol (CBD), a substance found in marijuana that is thought to be responsible for some of its mellowing or anxiety-reducing effects. Unlike the main ingredient in marijuana, THC, which can produce psychotic reactions and may worsen schizophrenia, CBD has antipsychotic effects, according to previous research in both animals and humans.

Neither the patients nor the scientists knew who was getting which drug. At the end of the four-week trial, both groups showed significant clinical improvement in their schizophrenic symptoms, and there was no difference between those getting CBD or amisulpride.

Inform Yourself About Cannabis & Join The Movement That’s Saving Lives

wietolie.euWe want to be healthy. We want our children to be healthy.

We want to prevent disease, and we surely want to treat disease compassionately. We want nutritionally complete food and we want safe and effective medicine. Well, where do we all start?

Before we go any further here, let’s be clear, we’re talking about the responsible use of cannabis for parents, our children, and the children of the future. We are talking about the lack of access to safe medicine.

Let’s start with the Jamaican study.

In Jamaica cannabis is culturally acceptable and considered to be a safe and effective way to relax and relieve stress, as well a natural medicine. A controlled study was done comparing the health of babies born from a group of women who were smoking and consuming cannabis in a tea and a group of women that were not using cannabis during pregnancy. The results are surprising.

Not only were there no significant differences between the groups of newborns, but the newborns from the cannabis group scored a little higher in autonomic stability and reflexes at one month of age. These babies were actually more social than the babies from the non-using group and had significantly higher scores in: habituation to auditory and tactile stimuli, degree of alertness, capacity to be consoled, and self-regulation. [1]

They had less irritability, fewer startles and tremors, a higher and better quality of alertness, and were more rewarding for their caregivers than the neonates of the non-using group of mothers. At 5 years of age there were no significant differences anymore. Why would these children have scored higher in autonomic stability and reflexes at 30 days old, but then be scoring around the same at 5 years of age?

Science offers us answers.

Human breast milk contains cannabinoids including THC, some of the same cannabinoids that are found in cannabis. It’s no secret that
breast milk is better for infants and children than cow’s milk or formula, and cow’s milk is actually an acidic animal protein and a carcinogen that wreaks havoc on our bodies and the bodies of our children. Most formulas actually contain several carcinogens in their ingredients and most formulas also contain genetically modified (GMO) ingredients as well. So if human breast milk contains the same cannabinoids that are found in cannabis, shouldn’t these huge corporations be adding cannabinoids to their formula instead of carcinogens?

Studies show that “the blocking of cannabinoid receptor activation during early development is considered to have ‘catastrophic’ effects.” So if the cannabinoids in human breast milk that are crucial to the development of an infant aren’t added to the infant formulas, where are babies getting them?

Well, they are not receiving cannabinoids at all.

Hennep can DNA repareren!

Hennep - wietolie.euby Becca Wolford,Contributing Writer

Did you know that DNA can be damaged…and repaired?

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the hereditary material found in humans, animals, and organisms. DNA is in every cell in our bodies. Each cell’s nucleus has DNA, which is rolled into structures that are our chromosomes (23 pairs).

Most genes contain the information needed to make functional molecules called proteins. (A few genes produce other molecules that help the cell assemble proteins.) The journey from gene to protein is complex and tightly controlled within each cell. It consists of two major steps: transcription and translation. Together, transcription and translation are known as gene expression.

During the process of transcription, the information stored in a gene’s DNA is transferred to a similar molecule called RNA (ribonucleic acid) in the cell nucleus. Both RNA and DNA are made up of a chain of nucleotide bases, but they have slightly different chemical properties. The type of RNA that contains the information for making a protein is called messenger RNA (mRNA) because it carries the information, or message, from the DNA out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm.” (http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov)

The genes direct protein production. For example, a protein (a long chain of amino acids) can be an enzyme that triggers a certain chemical reaction in the body. One function of protein is to boost the immune system.

There are many factors that cause damaged DNA : oxidation, UV radiation from the sun, radiation from Xrays, viruses, plant toxins, and man-made chemicals (chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, hydrocarbons, smoke, pollution, to name a few). Some results of damaged DNA are: premature aging, cancer, diabetes mellitus (diabetes itself may cause DNA damage), Parkinson’s, Alzheimers, chronic fatigue syndrome, and many other conditions.

Cells cannot function properly if the DNA is damaged. However, the cells CAN, through chemical processes, reverse the damage themselves.

Hempseed and hempseed oil have been found to be a factor in DNA repair. Hemp has the perfect 3:1 ratio of Omega fatty acids (Omega 3 and Omega 6) needed by the human body. One ‘job’ of Omega 3 is cellular repair. Hemp is 65% protein, 35% of which is globulin edestin protein. It is the protein that is closest to human globulin, and is very easily digestible by the body.

The protein is a major factor in DNA repair, as the cells use that protein to correct the DNA damage.

Because hemp is the highest source of Edestin protein, AND is responsible for boosting the immune system, it is a perfect addition to the the diet.

zelfmoord
